Instructions and Guidelines for Discussion Board #7

Please view the documentary, The Case Against 8, HBO Documentary Films (1 hour and 50
min.) This documentary is a highly rated and well-reviewed film. It was described as “riveting”
and I agree. Several times during my viewing, I got goose bumps, and felt emotional, so I hope
you can carve out some time to watch it in its entirety and fully experience it . It covers the legal
process and implications of same-sex marriage in California. In 2008, the California Supreme
Court ruled that same-sex couples had the right to get married. Shortly after, the California
voters passed Proposition 8 in California, in which the voters established that marriage was
“between a man and a woman.” This documentary takes an inside look at the groundbreaking
Supreme Court case that fought Proposition 8.

The material from the video will be used both in this discussion board and in the paper.

This goes with our discussion of law and public policy that several of our readings have
discussed.

There were a number of scenes that may have “tugged on your heart strings.” If time is short,
you can “fast-forward” as needed and also there is a transcript.

Choose two scenes that may have evoked similar emotions that you experienced from our
readings. Those emotions might be empathy, identification, frustration at injustice,
discouragement with the status quo, etc. So, the purpose is to connect two things from the
video to any two readings from our text that stood out to you. Be sure to discuss only things
that you feel safe and comfortable sharing on the discussion board. This does not necessarily
need to relate to your personal experience, and if so, only as much as you feel comfortable
sharing. The post can simply be about comparing and contrasting your emotions and reactions
to the documentary to two of the readings. If you could include the time markers, that would be
great. For example, there was a scene roughly around marker 39:00 where Ms. Perry was
describing how she experienced “difference” in her life. It certainly reminded me of a few of the
readings and PAs.

Reply to one student’s post, with insightful commentary/discussion.
