Most of us live in family groups. Even if you live alone, you may be part of a social group that feels like a family. Foreign exchange students come to the United States in large numbers to experience a different culture. You have been given the opportunity to be an exchange adult for 2 weeks, not to another country, but rather to a family different from the type you know.

For this assignment, you are asked to describe two families: one that you have experienced either now or growing up and one that you would be interested in experiencing for 2 weeks.

For example, if your experience was growing up on a farm, you might want to experience family life in a large urban area. If you grew up in a single-parent home, you might want to experience life in a home with 2 parents.

For this discussion, you are to include details of both these family types in 3 well-developed paragraphs.

In the first paragraph, describe the family type you have already experienced, including:

· Type of Family

· Nuclear or extended

· Parents (one or two), grandparents, or other guardians

· Rural, suburban, or urban

· Authoritarian, permissive, uninvolved, authoritative Use this link for more information on

In the second paragraph, describe the family type you would be interested in experiencing for 2 weeks using the same criteria.

· Type of Family

· Nuclear or extended

.

· Why did you choose this type?

In the third and final paragraph,

· Describe the differences between the two families

· Describe the ways they are similar

· Reflect on the benefits of participating in such an exchange

· What did you learn about yourself from this experience?

· What did you learn about families?

· Describe what your life today might look like had you had your exchange family during your childhood.
