Objective assessments are based on measuring responses that are within the set confine, while projective assessments are interpretive and ambiguous in nature. An example of an objective assessment is the
Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2; Butcher, Graham, Ben-Porath, Tellegen, Dahlstrom, & Kaemmer, 2001) as the entire assessment is a standardized test. An example of a projective assessment is the
Thematic Apperception Test (TAT; Murray, 1943). Individuals provide narratives based on a set of scenarios, and these narratives can give insight into the emotional state or self-concept of the individual. This assessment is highly subjective as it relies on each individual’s projection and even relies on the tester’s psychological state and knowledge.
I would definitely wish to be evaluated based on objective test as it is based on a standard structure. Projective assessments are contingent on the evaluator’s knowledge and their implicit biases. I am not particularly fond of being evaluated based on someone else’s unconscious attributes and attitudes, so the more objective the assessment the better.
