One of the more interesting aspects of this learning module is examining the tension that often times occurs between explosive expansion of the University and the faculty autonomy that’s required in a traditional university setting. Traditionalists will point towards the role of faculty leadership and autonomy as integral to the university experience. While the pursuit of explosive growth makes some of those autonomous opportunities difficult to maintain. The readings describe this tension and, in this discussion, question please articulate your understanding of this tension and why it is particularly challenging in institutions of higher education today.

For this discussion question we would like for you to expand on the challenge that leaders face at the crossroads of deciding whether or not they should remain rooted to certain focal points and/or abandon some of those institutions in the name of growth. Why are those decisions sometimes difficult to make? What can be done to make those decisions perhaps a bit easier to digest?
