Reading comprehension is a complex cognitive process that includes extracting information and making meaning. Simply put, comprehension is understanding what one is reading and the ultimate goal of all reading activity.

Reading comprehension was assessed using: (a) the Maze Assessment. The Maze Assessment is a task that measures how well students understand the text they read silently. The Maze Assessment differs from traditional comprehension in that it is based completely on the text. After the first sentence, every seventh word in the passage is replaced with the correct word and two distractors. Students choose the word from among the three choices that fits best with the rest of the passage. Students were given two grade-level Maze Assessment passages.

On the Maze Assessment, Rose scored at or above the fall benchmark for 4th grade. On the 4A Maze Assessment, she identified 22 correct responses and 0 incorrect responses. On the 4B Maze Assessment, she identified 15 correct responses and 1 incorrect response. Rose’s silent reading comprehension appears to be on grade level.
